Adult speech therapy (easy read)

What is adult speech therapy?

Adult speech therapy is support for people of all ages to build stronger communication skills and help improve daily life — at home, at work, and in the community. It’s tailored to each person’s goals and uses practical strategies that are proven to help.

Who this therapy supports

The service is available to:

  • Young adults — focusing on everyday communication, social skills, workplace confidence, literacy, self-advocacy and independence
  • Older adults — helping with language challenges after stroke or brain injury, difficulties with voice or swallowing, and communication changes from Parkinson’s or dementia
  • Adults with neurodevelopmental conditions, intellectual disability, ADHD, autism, genetic conditions, cerebral palsy and other neurological needs

Typical areas covered

Adult speech therapy at Socle can help with:

  • Speaking clearly and effectively
  • Understanding and using language
  • Social communication and confidence
  • Voice changes and projection
  • Swallowing safety (dysphagia)
  • Planning and thinking skills related to communication

How therapy works

  • Sessions are usually about 60 minutes but can be shorter or longer depending on need.
  • Therapy is personalised and focused on your goals and what matters in your everyday life.
  • Families, carers or support people are included where helpful to back up learning outside sessions.
  • Support is offered in English, Korean and Mandarin for bilingual adults.

NDIS and telehealth support

  • Socle is a registered NDIS provider, which means they can work with self-managed, plan-managed and agency/NDIA-managed clients for funded support.
  • Telehealth options are available for people who cannot come to the centre.

What happens in an assessment

The speech pathologist will:

  • Work with you to set goals that are meaningful for your life and routines
  • Talk with you about your communication strengths and challenges
  • Look at how you use communication in real life
  • Use formal and informal tools to understand areas like voice, language, thinking and swallowing
