Speech therapy assessment Eastwood

We provide neuro-affirming, respectful assessments that consider sensory needs and real-world communication.

Exploring communication strengths and needs together

Our team has extensive experience assessing communication needs across the lifespan, working with children, teens, and adults with a wide range of profiles and support needs. We work alongside clients and their families to gain a holistic understanding of communication strengths, challenges, and everyday experiences.

For toddlers and preschool-aged children, assessments often include play-based observation, interaction, and early language sampling. For older children, teens, and adults, assessments may focus more on language comprehension, expression, social communication, and functional communication skills. Because every person communicates differently, assessment approaches are tailored to each individual.

Bilingual assessments

Our team is made up of bilingual speech pathologists who understand the complexities of bilingual language acquisition. We assess communication across all the languages a person uses and recognise bilingualism as a strength. We are also able to speak Korean and Mandarin to support assessment of clients who may have English as a second or third language.

Personalised assessments

Our speech pathologists tailor assessments based on the individualised needs of each client. This is based on the information that we gather from client questionnaires before each assessment. Assessments are designed to be respectful, evidence-based and responsive to sensory, emotional, and communication needs.

They may include standardised assessment tools, play-based speech and language observations, and interviews with carers and teachers.

Frequently asked questions
about speech therapy assessment

An assessment helps us understand how an individual communicates, including their strengths, challenges, and learning style. Starting with an assessment allows us to identify the underlying reasons for communication difficulties and to plan therapy that is targeted and effective. We use assessment findings to set meaningful goals and ensure therapy time is focused, appropriate, and personalised which will yield the best, lasting results over time.
The assessment is usually 60-90 minutes depending on the areas of communication that need to be assessed.
Following assessment, your speech pathologist will write a detailed assessment report which you can share with your child’s Teacher or any other professionals your child/you may be seeing. The report also helps to form the basis of deciding what therapy will look like and what goals/areas that the speech pathologist will start working on with you/your child to improve their outcomes.
Yes, we work with all children and also support families who may be on journeys to understanding communication or neurodivergent differences. While we do not make medical diagnoses, our assessments provide detailed information about communication strengths, differences, and support needs. These findings can help to support paediatricians and psychologists more directly involved in the diagnostic process.
