Paediatric speech therapy (easy read)

What is paediatric speech therapy?

Paediatric speech therapy helps young children build their communication skills so they can connect with others, learn, and take part in everyday life. Speech therapy focuses on helping kids communicate more clearly and confidently through enjoyable, child-friendly activities.

Who it supports

Paediatric speech therapy is available for:

  • Toddlers – learning to make sounds, understand simple words and follow instructions.
  • Preschoolers – talking in longer sentences, asking questions and joining conversations.
  • School‑aged children – using language for learning, reading and social interaction.

What it involves

Speech therapy can help with:

  • Making speech clearer (pronunciation)
  • Children who are late talkers or have language delays
  • Understanding and using language
  • Social communication and play skills
  • Reading and spelling challenges
  • Stuttering
  • Picky eating and mealtime challenges
  • Supporting communication in more than one language (like English, Korean or Mandarin)
  • Getting ready for the classroom and school communication needs

How the therapy works

  • Sessions are usually about 45 minutes long but can be shorter or longer based on your child’s needs.
  • Therapy is play-based and individualised, meaning it fits your child’s way of learning and interests.
  • Parents and carers are involved throughout — both in sessions and with activities to practise at home.
  • There’s an emphasis on natural interaction and building confidence in a warm and welcoming setting.

Language and cultural support

The team offers support in multiple languages, so families who speak languages other than English can access therapy in a way that feels comfortable for them.

Family involvement

Families are encouraged to take part in goal setting, understand progress and learn how to help their child practise skills between sessions.
